The group is charged with converting the ASOF Science Plan into an effective Implementation Plan, with trialling innovative parts of that plan, and with making the first full circum-arctic deployment of the ASOF Array sometime before the end 2003. The ISSG is intentionally strong on scientists with field experience of the challenging conditions of Arctic and subArctic Seas. Many elements of the ASOF Array are already deployed or on test in the field. The ISSG is also designed to cover the full range of expertise that will be required. To make full use of that expertise, the Group's modus operandi is designed to be flexible: First, the Group will work intercessionally, at a pace and timing that fits in with the availability of individual Group members; thus the thinking, modelling, design studies, field trials etc... that form the main business of the Group until implementation will be carried out as their individual schedules permit, and the Group will meet once per year to discuss results rather than to make plans to get results. The first annual meeting was held at the National Science Foundation in Washington on 29 November - 1 December. As a second element of flexibility, ISSG scientists are shown paired wherever possible on the above list, not as "1st choice plus alternate" but as a means of ensuring that a particular key element of the plan is well covered if, for some reason, both are unable to attend the annual meeting. Third, the ISSG is purposely organised into two halves, ASOF-West under Peter Rhines as Deputy Chair and ASOF-East under Jens Meincke. In this way, either "half" might meet more frequently to discuss plans, progress or funding* when the need or occasion arises without the need for the full ISSG to attend. |
